Apr 13th 2011, 14:36 by E O Hatterpol | KUIPER BELT DAY 9

AHOY, Flybrarians! Today marks day #9 of my trip through the Kuiper Belt & day #2 of my new attitude towards outer space!

I decided to take a tour of the things that make me happy, & where better to start than the Baleen Plates Observation Deck (BPOD)?

I'm sure I've mentioned it before - somewhere back around the Moon or Mars probably - & I bet you're already familiar. Where a blue whale's mouth is full of baleen plates, our starship has reinforced glass that runs from starboard side through the bow to port side for a near-panoramic view of outer space.

Well, this is what it looks like from the inside!
It has a sleek, modern look that doesn't distract from the beauty of outer space.  Minimalist chairs line a thin bar up against the glass - which would be great for a date, if I could get one, by the way - & there's plenty of comfy seating in the middle.

Grabbing a few pillows on the wrap-around sectional couch is a great way to spend an afternoon with your favourite book, comic, manga or graphic novel (checked out from the Flybrary, of course!).

We do have a tree, to which I cling dearly.  I was tweeted from the DC Cherry Blossom festival the other day & am missing nature.  The tree helps, but it's just not the same as an old-growth forest.

Ah! Look at me starting to complain! Let's try that again: I am grateful for any vegetation & hope there'll be plenty more on the Homesphære!

There's also a giant television screen that shows films on Friday nights.  It's a big to-do, & most if not all Flybrarians line the sofa to share sodas, popcorn & candies.  I've even seen some naughty Right Hemispheres (RHs) sneak a pint in from the Whale's Liver.

I want to join them but I have an illogical fear that since I'm not part of the crew, the Captain will send me overboard if I step out of line even once.  I know, I'm crazy, right?

The TV screen shows news from Earth & other planets the rest of the week, as well as updates about our progress, status, itinerary, &c.

With such a cool space for lounging, socializing & reading books, it's easy to stay positive!  I can't believe I was so dramatic in the past; I'm ready & revved up for what's next!

C'mon, outer space, throw everything you got at me!  I won't stop, because it's Homesphære or bust!!

  1. Huzzah! Sounds like an absolute dream! Wish I was there, chowin on some popcorn and catching a flick in the whale's Mouth. :)

  2. I'll save an honorary seat for you, Oru! This Friday they're showing one of my favourite sci-fi flicks: District 9!

  3. What a gorgeous place! And of course there will be trees in the Homesphære! I demand pictures of them once you arrive. Trees are a personal favorite of mine!

So, question: what sort of films do they screen? Do they try and stick with one genre or do the films vary wildly?

  4. ANY MOVIE is fair game, but I've found that nearly everyone aboard the Flybrary prefers science fantasy. Tonight's movie is "Robin Hood: Men in Tights"! Classic.
